North Gulf County

Rich in history, resources and recreation, Northern Gulf County includes Wewahitchka, referred to locally as “Wewa” (pronounced “wee-waa”). Things to Do in North Gulf County

The Apalachicola National Forest, Gaskin Wildlife management Area, G.U. Parker Game Reserve, Ed Ball Wildlife Management Area, and other state- and privately-owned woodlands offer thousands of acres where the hunting enthusiast can enjoy his/her sport. The Dead Lakes, Chipola and Apalachicola River systems offer freshwater fishing at its best!

City parks offer a great setting for outdoor festivals and events, like the famous Tupelo Honey Festival held here each spring. There is also a modern lighted four-field softball complex, which hosts numerous tournaments and is a popular facility for teams throughout north Florida.

Located just north and east of the city of Wewahitchka in northern Gulf County is one of the southeast’s best freshwater fishing locations. Fishermen from across the country have over the years made the Dead Lakes a regular visit on their fishing schedule. This beautifully unique body of water is a result of the Dead Lakes dam, located just east of Wewahitchka.

If it’s the beach you’re in the mood for, St. Joe Beach’s pristine white sands are just a 30 minute drive from Wewahitchka.  Additionally, Port St. Joe is also a 30 minute drive from Wewahitchka, where you can enjoy the shopping and restaurants downtown has to offer.
